Americas Pacific Challenge to return in October

The Americas Pacific Challenge will make a return in October after a three-year hiatus. Montevideo will again be the host city with a familiar three-match format featuring six ‘Next Senior’ – or Senior ‘A’ – sides. While caps and World Rugby Rankings points are not up for grabs, players who compete will be tied to the nation they represent.

Notably there are no Pacific Island nations involved due to the pandemic. Instead the teams participating are nearly identical to that of the currently-cancelled Americas Rugby Championship with one exception. Canada is not involved in the tournament, with Paraguay instead taking up the invitation.

Estadio Charrúa has been the venue for all three previous editions of the APC which ran from 2016 to 2018. The Argentina XV won the first two events, with Samoa ‘A’ winning the third. Other teams who have competed in the past include the Fiji Warriors, Tonga ‘A’, and Canada ‘A’.

World Rugby are providing funding for squads of 28 to attend with a stipulation – only five players on the traveling roster are permitted to be over the age of 23. Teams in Pool A will compete against those in Pool B, with the winner determined by competition points total.

Broadcast details are to be confirmed.
