Provence sign Puma Tomás de la Vega from Toronto Arrows

French club Provence Rugby is recruiting a Pumas as a medical joker. Rugby Rama reports that Tomás de la Vega is on his way to Pro D2 side Aix-en-Provence in a transfer from the Toronto Arrows. The move sees de la Vega replacing Nicolas Mousset who is out for four months.

de la Vega could thus return to Major League Rugby (MLR), and specifically, the Toronto Arrows, following the completition of his medical joker contract. An additional possibility is for the player to remain at the club for an additional period or on a permanent contract.

The 30-year-old de la Vega joined the Toronto Arrows in 2020 from his nartive Buenos Aires. The move saw him playing abroad for the first time. It came after he had previously played for Argentina’s former developmental side Los Pampas XV in 2011-2013. He subsequently opted to play for his club CUBA rather than play professionally in Argentina.

His move to Major League Rugby proved to be highly successful. The flanker was among the top performers in both of his seasons with the Arrows. He has a high workrate both on attack and defense and is Mr. reliable in the lineout.

de la Vega has 12 caps for Argentina. He was a Puma from 2011-2014. Hie made his debut against Chile in the 2011 South American Championship. His most recent cap was against Scotland in June 2014. The door has not closed on de la Vega. To the contrary, his performances in MLR demonstrate that of a player that could earn a call-up, potentially for the 2021 November tour of Europe.

Aix-en-Provence is now home to three South Americans. de la Vega joins Uruguayan hooker Germán Kessler and Argentine prop Federico Wegrzyn. Kessler joined from Charente this season while Wegrzyn was recuited from Los Jaguares XV.
