Utah stalwart Matt Jensen announces retirement

Matt Jensen has announced his retirement from rugby at the age of 29. In a statement posted on social media, the Utah Warriors stalwart and former USA Eagles lock, who has maintained a full-time job away from rugby, says he intends to spend more time with his young family.

“I’m sad to be saying I’m done, but I know it’s time. I’ve stood along side some amazing players and even better men. I have lifelong friends across the entire world because of this sport. I’ll miss it for sure, but I can’t wait to be a full time husband and a full time dad to my two boys.”

Jensen has been a fixture in the Warriors lineup since their inaugural season and he proved one of MLR’s most dominant lineout jumpers. He played every game from 2018 to 2020, missing only four matches during the 2021 campaign. All but two of his 43 appearances were starts.

After earning 1st Team Collegiate All-American honors while at BYU in 2016, Jensen made the jump to test rugby the following year. He debuted against Uruguay in the Americas Rugby Championship and was later a replacement against Ireland, earning seven caps in all with his last against Los Teros in 2018.
