Leandro Leivas switches focus from rugby to polo

One of Uruguay’s longest-serving internationals has opted to step away from rugby. Having been left out of Uruguay’s training squad for the next round of World Cup Qualifying in October, Ignacio Chans reports that Leandro Leivas will instead shift his sporting focus to polo.

Leivas departs test rugby with 76 caps since debuting against the USA in 2008. The 33-year-old winger scored 23 tries in tests including a hat-trick in the win over Chile during the 2010 South American Championship. He was selected to both the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.

While he has not entirely declared his retirement from the sport, Leivas has confirmed he will not be returning to the Toronto Arrows in 2022. In his three seasons with the club ‘Colo’ played 20 matches with 13 starts and scored 6 tries. Leivas hopes to play again one day for his original club Old Christians.

Polo has long been an interest for Leivas though he did not take up the sport as a player until 2019. He continued to play on occasion in Toronto and now intends to spend a few months in the USA.
