Matías Moroni sidelined for 4 weeks with injury

Matías Moroni will not be considered for this coming Saturday’s Rugby Championship match against South Africa. The Puma suffered a torn right quad and now faces a three to four week recovery. He started for Argentina in game one of the Rugby Championship, playing on the left wing.

The 30-year-old is naturally an outside center; he had a strong 2020-2021 season for the Leicester Tigers in the position. Notwithstanding, Mario Ledesma played him on the wing last weekend and he also featured there in the July Internationals.

Moroni earned his 51st cap this past weekend. Fellow English-based center Matías Orlando has 47 caps. He is also with the roster but, like Moroni, he will not feature for Los Pumas on Saturday.

The absence of Moroni and Orlando will unlikely impact Ledesma’s plans. Jerónimo de la Fuente and Santiago Chocobares are on track to be retained as the starting centers. Moreover, Emiliano Boffelli is available again to give Argentina a further option for wing and fullback. Santiago Cordero will potentially replace Moroni to join Bautista Delguy, and Santiago Carreras in the back-three.
