Joaquín Díaz Bonilla will play in South Africa. The 32-year-old has signed for the Sharks, a former Super Rugby franchise that now competes in the United Rugby Championship. In doing so, Díaz Bonilla will play for a fourth professional team in a fourth league and in a fourth country.
Díaz Bonilla was Los Jaguares’ starting fly half in the 2019 Super Rugby final. He has a strong season of Super Rugby but ultimately missed out on selection for RWC 2019.
Looking for cover during the tournament, Racing 92 signed Díaz Bonilla as a medical joker. It was followed by a return to Los Jaguares and then a move to England to join the Leicester Tigers.
His new home will see him moving from the English Premiership to the United Rugby Championship. It will not be a move to a Celtic team; but, rather to a South African.
The United Rugby Championship is the rebranded Pro 14. It will consist of 16 teams. They are the Bulls, Lions, Sharks, and Stormers (South Africa); Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys, and Scarlets (Wales); Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster (Ireland, Northern Ireland); Edinburgh, and Glasgow Warriors (Scotland); Benetton, and Zebre (Italy).
Díaz Bonilla is a product of Hindú Club. He went though the Argentine High Performance program. It was him playing u20s for Argentina and Sevens. He makes the move to the United Rugby Championship with four test caps to his name. They were earned in 2018 against Ireland and in 2019 against Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
