Carlos Muzzio becomes Argentina’s oldest ever test debutant

Carlos Muzzio made history in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The battle-hardened 36-year-old made his test debut for Argentina. He was a second half replacement for Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro in Argentina’s away defeat against the world champions.

His test debut came one week before his 37th birthday. This saw him not only breaking but smashing the prior record for the oldest Pumas debutant. Tucumán flanker Julio Farías Cabello debuted for Argentina at the age of 32.

Muzzio’s test debut came following a surprise call-up in July. Mario Ledesma selected Muzzio as injury cover for the matches against Romania and Wales. It followed the non-availability of loose head props Ignacio Callás and Mayco Vivas. Facundo Gigena made his debut against Romania.

Federico Wegrzyn had also been well positioned to debut but was forced out through injury. He now plays in France for Provence. Wegrzyn will face Muzzio in the Pro D2. That is to say, both players are contracted to French second division teams.

Muzzio is a product of San Patricio in the northern Argentine city of Corrientes. He departed Argentina for France in 2010 to join Vannes. He subsequently played for Tarbes, and Mont de Marsan. He has been on the Mont de Marsan roster since 2014.
