Uruguay has confirmed a 25-man roster to train together at the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo. The players will train in the country’s High Performance Rugby Center to prepare for the upcoming RWC 2023 qualifiers against either Canada or the USA.
As the winners of the South American RWC 2023 qualifying process, Uruguay await the North American champion. The teams will go head-to-head in a home-and-away series in October. The winner will qualify for RWC 2023 as Americas 1. That team will join France, Italy, New Zealand and Africa 1 in Pool A. Americas 2 will join Argentina, England, Japan and Samoa in Pool D of France 2023.
Uruguay’s 25-man roster contains home based and Major League Rugby names. Players based in the USA and Canada will combine with Peñarol names from the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby. They will be joined by additional players based in Europe ahead of the RWC qualifiers against the North American champion.
The roster includes Los Teros captain Andrés Vilaseca. He has no shortage of established teammates alongside him. Indeed, Santiago Civetta, Manuel Diana, Ignacio Dotti, Juan Echeverría, Tomás Inciarte, Nicolás Freitas, Gastón Mieres, Diego Magno, Guillermo Pujadas, and Rodrigo Silva join Vilaseca in the training regime in Montevideo.
Notably absent is veteran winger Leandro Leivas, whose international career looks to be at and end with youngsters Baltazar Amaya and Mateo Viñals preferred. No8 Alejandro Nieto is injured, while hooker Facundo Gattas in unavailable due to commitments with Argentina club Hindú.
