Hong Kong Sevens cancelled for a second straight year

For a second straight year there will be no Hong Kong Sevens. The plug has been pulled on the tournament that was due to run from November 5 to 7, with the COVID-19 pandemic once again the culprit. A media release indicates the 2022 edition is currently scheduled for April 1 to 3.

“Continued restrictions around international travel have significantly complicated the participation of numerous teams for November, including those from high-risk travel areas that are forbidden from entering Hong Kong at present. Increasing domestic lockdowns and tightening quarantine restrictions around outbound travel present further complications for teams from across the world.”

This is the first casualty of the revised World Sevens Series calendar, and there will now be concerns about the feasibility of other stops given the recent surge of delta variant cases. Canada are to host back-to-back tournaments in Vancouver and Edmonton on the weekends of September 18 and 25, with Singapore hosting at the end of October.

With Hong Kong out of the picture the remaining events, which include both men and women’s brackets, are Dubai on the December 3 weekend and Cape Town beginning on December 10.
