Canada and USA fall out of Medal contention

The Americas will have no medalists at the Women’s Sevens in Tokyo. North America’s hopefuls Canada and the USA have both fallen out of contention, the former joining Brazil in missing the Quarter Finals entirely while the Eagles can finish no higher than 5th after coming up short against Great Britain.

There will be a new Olympic champion as Australia fell first to the USA in the final pool match before being upset by Fiji in the second Quarter Final. The USA’s outstanding victory gave them top spot in Pool C but their medal hopes were shattered by Great Britain who ran out to a 21-nil lead in the third Quarter Final before conceding two tries to the Eagles.

Canada’s disappointing pool run was capped by a dismal 31-nil defeat to France, with China’s dominant win over Japan enough to knock the Maple Leafs out of the medal rounds. A one-sided win over Brazil, their second of the tournament, was scant consolation for Canada who now play Kenya for 9th place.

Las Yaras were routed by Fiji in their final pool match with Bianca Silva once again the try scorer. They now face Japan in their final game in the hopes of avoiding the bottom ranking. The Eagles are up against China, with a possible rematch against Australia – should they beat Russia – for 5th spot up for grabs.
