USA off to a fast start in Tokyo, Canada fall to Fiji

So far so good for the USA to start the Women’s Sevens at the Tokyo Olympics. Two tries from Kristi Kirshe led the way in a strong performance against China in their opening match. It was a similarly impressive effort against hosts Japan in the second to clinch a spot in the Quarter Finals for the Eagles.

Canada recovered from a slow first half against Brazil to blow past the South Americans by 33-nil with Keyara Wardley notching a double. Things would not go to plan against Fiji, however. By the first minute of the second half the Canadians trailed 26-nil and there was not enough time for a recovery.

Las Yaras struggled not only against Canada but also against France. They did manage to score a try through Bianca Silva but are now at the bottom of the pool and with the lowest points differential in the tournament are virtually certain of missing out on the Quarter Finals.

It’s Fiji who will square off with Brazil on Day Two in the final round of the Pool Stage, which takes place later on Thursday evening in the Americas. Canada will take on France wary that points will be needed for a better draw heading into the finals. The USA will take on Australia with the winner to top Pool C.
