4 Olympians among 12 New Pumas for Rugby Championship

Argentina has a large roster for the Rugby Championship. It contains experienced players, newcomers and everything in between. The 47-man roster has 12 players yet to earn their first test caps, 4 of whom won Bronze Medals for Argentina at the Tokyo Olympics.

The twelve uncapped players cover most positions. They come in the form of six forwards and six backs. Jaguares XV hooker Ignacio Ruiz is rewarded both for his strong season in SLAR and for his availability. Loose head Rodrigo Martínez also played SLAR, doing so for the Olímpia Lions.

Four of the five remaining uncapped forwards are now playing their rugby in Europe. Loose Head Thomas Gallo had a solid rookie season for Benetton. Joel Sclavi has returned to France from SLAR to play for La Rochelle and Carlos Muzzio turns 37 in August.

Four of the five backs have been named on the roster one day after winning Bronze Medals in Tokyo. Santiago Mare, Marcos Moneta, Lucio Cinti, and Ignacio Mendy were all heavily involved in the history-making campaign. They are joined by Newcastle Falcons speedster Mateo Carreras.

Rodrigo Fernández Criado, Joaquín Oviedo and Lucio Cinti were all included on the roster for the 2020 Rugby Championship. None of them received game time; albeit, Cinti was an unused replacement in Argentina’s win over New Zealand in Sydney.
