Argentina into Olympic Semi Final, USA and Canada defeated

A remarkable victory by Argentina over South Africa in the Quarter Final sees Los Pumas within one victory of a medal. Gastón Revol’s red card just two minutes into the game looked to have ended all hope but two tries from Marcos Moneta helped secure a famous 19-14 victory.

Argentina were forced to defend with just five players in the final seconds after Lautaro Bazán Vélez was shown yellow. Earlier in the day Los Pumas had thrashed South Korea to take second place in Pool A.

The final game of Pool A saw New Zealand come from behind to stop Australia and maintain their perfect record, which continued in the Quarter Final in a comfortable victory over Canada. The Canadians had done well to reach the final eight with Connor Braid’s hat trick headlining a dominant victory over Japan, and were boosted by Ireland’s upset win over Ireland.

Where Day One was joy for the USA, Day Two was the opposite. The Eagles were first defeated by South Africa in their final pool match and then crashed to defeat against Great Britain despite holding a 21-nil lead after five minutes thanks to a double from Perry Baker. Great Britain would score twice after Stephen Tomasin’s yellow card early in the second half and time ran out on the Eagles.

The two North American sides will go head-to-head in the 5th-Place Semi Final this evening with the winner to face South Africa or Australia. Los Pumas are up against defending champions Fiji in the second Semi Final with New Zealand squaring off against Great Britain in the first.
