Seawolves secure Malcolm and Futi on long-term deals

The Seattle Seawolves have secured two of their standouts from the 2021 season on long-term deals. Hooker James Malcolm and outside back Lauina Futi have each committed through the end of the 2024 Major League Rugby season. They follow captain Riekert Hattingh in signing new contracts.

Malcolm, 26, was originally signed by Dallas but then joined the Seawolves following the departure of Stephan Coetzee. The Scottish age-grade international was an inspired choice for Seattle, scoring a hat-trick in his first nine minutes of his MLR debut. He played 12 games, 11 of them starts, and was equally impressive in the loose and the set piece.

Futi was a late addition to the squad, called up from the local Seattle Rugby Club to make his professional debut against Utah in Week 12. The 25-year-old grabbed his own hat-trick against Austin and started the final seven games of the season, splitting his time between wing and center. Originally from American Samoa, Futi qualifies for the USA on residency.
