Matías Moroni celebrates 50 caps for Los Pumas

Matías Moroni warned his 50th cap for Argentina on Saturday. He celebrated reaching the mark of 50 test matches by playing in a winning team and scoring a try. Los Pumas were 33-11 winners over Wales in Cardiff. The result gave Argentina a series victory against the 2021 Six Nations champions.

Moroni’s 50 caps were earned from June 2014 to July 2021. His first was a home match against Scotland in Córdoba. On that occasion he was a second half replacement for Matías Orlando. Both players now play in the English Premiership, doing so after having been regulars for Los Jaguares in Super Rugby.

Orlando is three caps away from reaching 50. He missed the July 2021 Internationals due to injury. He is now training to join Los Pumas for the Rugby Championship. He featured in the 2020 Tri Nations, including starting at outside center in the historic win over New Zealand.

Moroni missed the 2020 Tri Nations. It saw opportunities for other players. He retuned for the July 2021 Internationals and started in all three matches. He played outside center against Romania and also in the first match against Wales. Mario Ledesma moved Moroni to wing for the second test.

It was far from being Moroni’s first test match playing on the wing. Moroni started in the position for Los Pumas at RWC 2019. He also had a start at wing against Namibia at RWC 2015 before playing outside center in the Quarter Final win against Ireland.

Moroni’s 50 caps have won in the form of 38 starts at 12 appearances from the bench. 28 of the 50 caps have been playing outside center and 22 playing on the wing.
