Agustín Ormaechea earned his 50th test cap on Sunday. He did so playing for Uruguay against Chile in a RWC 2023 qualifier. The hard-fought victory saw Ormaechea joining an elite group of players to have won 50 or more caps for Los Teros.
He follows in the foot-steps of his father Diego Ormaechea. Agustín’s 50th cap came against a country that Diego played against plenty of times during his lengthily career. Diego Ormaechea earned 54 caps for Uruguay. He did so from 1979-1999 and had the honor of captaining Los Teros in their inaugural RWC campaign.
Agustín Ormaechea played in RWCs 2015 and 2019. He played in all four matches for Los Teros at RWC 2015 in England and Wales and all four in Japan 2019. His road to RWCs began with his test debut against Paraguay in 2011.
The 30-year-old is a lifelong friend of Felipe Berchesi. They have started together on many occasions for Uruguay. They did so against Chile on Sunday. Their attention is now on Brazil; Uruguay’s opponent this coming weekend. A win for Los Teros will see Uruguay finish top of the South American qualifiers to be well placed to compete for the right to be Americas 1 or Americas 2 at RWC 2023.
