Records set as Argentina complete historic series win over Wales

Argentina were 33-11 winners over Wales today. The result means Los Pumas completed an historic away series win over Wales. The teams competed to a 20-20 draw seven days ago. When added to Argentina’s win over Romania, July 2021 officially marks Argentina’s first unbeaten tour since 1992. Today’s win was also by a record margin of 22 points.

Argentina had a promising start; a Rodrigo Bruni break led to a penalty opportunity. Nicolás Sánchez missed. It continued his goal-kicking woes this month. Sánchez kicked 4/6 last week against Wales and 0/2 the prior week against Romania.

Wales’ Jarrod Evans also missed his first kick at goal; however, it was from a try. Owen Lane did well to get past Matías Moroni to dive in to score in the corner. Sánchez and Moroni got revenge three minutes later; the Leicester man scored and the Stade Français man converted for Los Pumas. The try came following waves of drives with Tomás Cubelli orchestrating play.

Sánchez extended Argentina’s lead with a penalty. Los Pumas then scored their second try with Cubelli darting over from close range. Evans discounted three points with a 31st minute penalty. It ended the first half scoring with Argentina in a commanding 17-8 lead.

Evans put Wales closer in the 50th minute. He landed a straight-forward penalty following an infringement from loose head Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro. Sánchez responded seven minutes later. A further Sánchez penalty put Los Pumas 12 points ahead with 15 minutes remaining.

A late Sánchez strike put the result beyond doubt; yet, Los Pumas were not done yet. Former captain Pablo Matera charged over for a try. It completed a 33-11 victory, a series win and Argentina’s biggest win over Wales.
