Perpignan signs 5th Argentine: Joaquín Oviedo from Córdoba

Joaquín Oviedo is on his way to France. The teenager has signed for Top 14 side Perpignan. The moves will see him joining four countrymen at the club. Perpignan have huge interest in Oviedo; the club have signed the Argentine No8 on a three-year-deal.

Perpignan won promotion from the Pro D2 to the Top 14 this past season. The club did so with Argentine backs Jerónimo de la Fuente and Patricio Fernández. The center and winger both helped the team to Pro D2 glory. Both players are from Rosario. Since then the club has recruited winger Bautista Delguy from Bordeaux and scrum-half Martín Landajo from the Harlequins.

Oviedo is a product of Córdoba Athletic. His development saw him featuring in the Argentina’s national rugby program, the High Performance Centers. He received a call-up to Los Pumas in 2020. He toured Australia as part of the Tri Nations. Mario Ledesma gave him game time in the warm-up matches though he remains uncapped at test level.

The Córdoba forward turns 20 later this month. He moves to France as a fit and solid athlete. He weighs 113kg and stands 1.91m tall. He is noted for his line-out jumping in addition to ball-carrying and defensive abilities.

Perpignan will be Oviedo’s second professional team. He played for Los Jaguares XV in the 2021 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). He was the starting N8 for the Argentine team. The team won all of their matches and were crowned champions by defeating Peñarol in the SLAR Final.
