Nafi Ma’afu set to play in Top 14 with Perpignan

US Eagles prospect Nafi Ma’afu has been promoted to Perpignan’s senior squad ahead of their return to the Top 14. The 23-year-old lock or blindside flanker has signed a two-year contract that will keep him in France through to Rugby World Cup 2023.

Ma’afu has been at the club since 2017 and after some injury struggles finally made his senior professional debut in February. He would play five matches before the end of the Pro D2 campaign including two starts, his most recent an 80-minute effort against Rouen Normandie in May.

Having represented the USA at u20 level, Ma’afu recently reiterated his desire to play for the Eagles at test level. The Arizona native joins two other Americans in the Top 14, both front rowers – prop Titi Lamositele at Montpellier and Lyon hooker Joe Taufete’e.
