Ryan Martin to depart Free Jacks for Melbourne Rebels

The New England Free Jacks will have a new Head Coach when they return to action next season. Ryan Martin will depart at season’s end, opting to take up a two-year deal as Attack Coach for the Melbourne Rebels of Super Rugby.

Martin joined the Free Jacks in July, signing a three-year deal to take over from Josh Smith who had led the team in their 2018 exhibition season and their inaugural 2019 Major League Rugby campaign. Smith changed roles to become Director of the club’s development program.

It’s the second MLR coach to make the switch to Super Rugby next season. Darren Coleman will leave the LA Giltinis to take over the Waratahs in 2022. Another already confirmed as departing is Paul Healy of the Houston SaberCats.

Originally from New Zealand, Martin had previously worked with the Rebels as a skills coach in 2020. He has also served as Attack Coach of Otago in the Mitre 10 Cup and Head Coach of the Asia Pacific Dragons in Global Rapid Rugby.
