Uruguay’s player roster is set to increase by eleven. Players are flying in to join the domestic-based players in Uruguay for the upcoming RWC 2023 qualifiers.
Los Teros will play against the Argentina XV this coming weekend. The fixture is a warm-up ahead of the must-win RWC 2023 qualifiers. Uruguay will be at home to face Brazil and the winner of Chile vs Colombia.
Uruguay’s roster will contain professional rugby players from home and abroad. 25 players have been training for the past month at the Estadio Charrúa. They are Peñarol players; athletes who featured for Uruguay’s team in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR).
11 players based outside of Uruguay will complement the Peñarol players to give Uruguay a complete roster. Ignacio Chans reports that the foreign-based players are to come from leagues in France and Italy in addition to Major League Rugby.
The players cover all positions; however, there is a notable absentee. Santiago Arata will not play for Uruguay in July. He has decided to remain in France to prepare with Castres for the pre-season. He will, nonetheless, be fully available to represent his country in the North America vs South America qualifiers in October.
