Darren Coleman to leave LA for Waratahs

The LA Giltinis will have a new Head Coach in 2022. Darren Coleman is returning to Australia to take up the top coaching position at the Waratahs, signing a three-year deal with the Sydney-based Super Rugby franchise. A formal announcement is expected later this week.

Coleman has led the Giltinis to a first overall spot on the table to date and has eyes on a Major League Rugby title in the club’s debut season. He had reportedly been offered similar terms to stay in LA but the lure of Super Rugby and a return to his home state of New South Wales has won out.

The Waratahs were Semi-Finalists are recently as 2018 but have failed to win a single game in 2021. They opted to fire Rob Penney from the Head Coach position after 18 months in charge with assistants Jason Gilmore and Chris Whitaker overlooking the side in an interim capacity.

Previously head of the Brumbies academy, Coleman won Shute Shield titles with Warringah and Gordon in 2017 and 2020 respectively. He was also Head Coach of the NSW Country Eagles in the National Rugby Championship, with his 20-year coaching career including stints in Canada, Italy, and Japan.
