Pumitas defeat combative Teritos

Argentina were 35-12 winners this morning over Uruguay. The South American battle was a final round clash in the u20 International Series in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It followed the earlier match in which South Africa were 28-0 winners over Georgia.

Los Pumitas won the battle of the Rio de la Plata 35-12. It involved a comeback after Uruguay had scored the opening points and the first try. It also required persistence; the wet conditions made play difficult.

This was evident in the opening try. Uruguay’s try was scored by Santiago Álvarez. The scrum-half punished a poor Argentine clearance and the wet conditions made the ball sit up well for the Teritos.

Argentina’s response came from their captain. Olímpia Lions flanker Jerónimo Gómez Vara scored the first of two opening half tries for the Argentines. The second came after Uruguayan captain Carlos Deus was yellow carded. Argentina were awarded a penalty try.

The second half saw Argentina on top. With three tries compared to one to Uruguay, Los Pumitas converted a 14-5 half-time lead into a 35-12 victory.
