Gonzalo García departs SLAR for Italy

Gonzalo García will continue his career abroad. The Argentine scrum-half has signed to play in Italy for Valorugby Emilia. The move will see him playing in the Italian league, the Top 10.

García captained Los Cafeteros Pro in the 2021 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). He was a standout performer in the South American league. ARN named García as the best scrum-half and best back in the tournament.

Argentine head coach Mario Ledesma named García on his 67-man roster for 2021 international duty. He was one of four players, the others being Gonzalo Bertranou, Tomás Cubelli, and Felipe Ezcurra. The 22-year-old García is uncapped.

Valorugby Emilia were Semi Finalists in last season’s Italian Top 10. The club may be a foot in the door for García. He has demonstrated the ability to play at the highest level.

His move to Italy follows that of fellow Tucumán player Máximo Ledesma. The fly half is also departing SLAR for Italy. He will join Rugby Lyon from Paraguay’s SLAR side, the Olímpia Lions. Both Máximo Ledesma and Gonzalo García are products of the Natación y Gimnasia club in Tucumán.
