Argentines shine over the Weekend

A number of Argentines played impressive rugby over the weekend. Players shined across different leagues in what was one of the final weekends of the regular season in Europe.

In England Pumas shined for the Leicester Tigers. Two Argentine forwards got their names on the scoresheets with second half tries; Tomás Lavanini and Julián Montoya both scored. Matías Moroni also played in the 38-31 Midlands derby win over the Wasps. Montoya and Moroni will remain at Leicester next season. Lavanini will continue his career in France with Clermont.

The Harlequins finished the regular season on a high. The London-based side were 54-26 winners over the Newcastle Falcons. Former Puma Martín Landajo was a try scorer for the Harlequins. He was joined by Santiago García Botta in the winning team. Uncapped Argentine winger Mateo Carreras featured for the Falcons. He had a strong performance, notably so on defense.

Argentine players also featured in Bordeaux’s win in the Top 14 barrage play-off. The 25-16 win over Clermont sees Bordeaux into the Semi Finals. They will face Toulouse next weekend. Santiago Cordero and Guido Petti started for Bordeaux against Clermont.

Argentines also impressed Across the North Atlantic Ocean. Julián Domínguez continued his fine season for the NOLA Gold. The uncapped Argentine winger scoredin his team’s 25-21 away win over Old Glory DC. Argentine center Juan Cappiello also started and scored for the winning team. The result keeps NOLA’s play-off’s dreams alive.

The Toronto Arrows season has not gone to plan. The Canadian MLR entrant fell to their largest MLR defeat; a 47-21 loss against the Austin Gilgronis in Texas. Former Pumas fullback Joaquín Tuculet scored the first of three tries for the Arrows. Former Pumas flanker Tomás de la Vega also featured for the Arrows.

Thomas Morani was a stand-out in a sublime match on Sunday. The Argentine center scored one try and had two try assists. His team, the San Diego Lions, blew a 17 point second half lead to fall to a 45-41 loss. Former Puma Santiago González Iglesias  also had a try assist for the San Diego Legion.

Bautista Ezcurra continued his fine season with Rugby ATL. The former Pumas center was a try scorer for the Rattlers against Rugby United New York. RUNY won the Sunday afternoon MLR match 31-24.

Domingo Miotti was a point scorer in his final match for the Western Force. The Super Rugby AU side from Perth, Australia were beaten 31-21 by the Blues in Auckland, New Zealand. The match result sees the Blues booking a place in the final against the Highlanders. Miotti will continue his career next season in the north. He will join the Glasgow Warriors to play in the Pro 14.
