Houston have begun the search for a new Head Coach with confirmation that Paul Healy will depart when his contract expires at the end of the season. The news comes as the SaberCats occupy the bottom of the overall table with just two wins from 11 games.
There were early troubles for the Cats as second rows Kyle Breytenbach and Jérémy Lenaerts initially opted out of the season, while a deal to land Romania international center Moa Maliepo fell through. Incumbent captain De Wet Roos has yet to appear in the regular season with co-captain Luke Beauchamp and first choice hooker Diego Fortuny also limited by injuries.
Healy was hired ahead of the 2020 season as a permanent replacement for the club’s first coach Justin Fitzpatrick. Current assistant Paul Emerick had served as Head Coach in an interim capacity for the last five games of the 2019 campaign, a period in which Houston won four matches.
Part of Healy’s mandate was to help develop Emerick as a potential successor but it now appears the SaberCats will consider their options. Under Healy the club has gone 3-13 with their combined record in Major League Rugby across four seasons now 10 wins and 30 losses.
