RWC 2023 Qualifiers: 25 Uruguayans begin preparations in Montevideo

A group of 25 Uruguayan players have begun preparing for the upcoming RWC 2023 qualifiers in Montevideo. Los Teros will play two home RWC qualifiers against South American opposition on July 18 and July 25. Before then Chile host Colombia and Brazil host Paraguay. The two winning teams will travel to Montevideo for the South American finals in July.

Uruguay are four-time RWC participants. Los Teros qualified for RWCs 1999, 2003, 2015, and 2019. None of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Paraguay have played at a Rugby World Cup.

The Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) enabled teams to prepare players better than previously for international duty. Chile’s entrant, Selknam defeated Uruguay’s entrant, Peñarol during the regular season. In short, there is reason to believe that Uruguay will be up against improved opponents.

Uruguay’s preparations begin with 25 players. They are Peñarol players who will be joined by additional names who play in Major League Rugby and in Europe. The final roster for the RWC qualifiers in July is forthcoming.

The 25 Peñarol players cover all positions. They will be training at the High Performance Center at the Estadio Charrúa. They are undoing tests today and tomorrow and will begin their RWC trainings together on Wednesday.
