Mont de Marsan sign Lucas Mensa from Valence Romans

Mont de Marsan have signed Lucas Mensa on a two year deal. The move sees the Argentine mid-fielder trading one Pro D2 club for another; Mensa joins Mont de Marsan from Valence Romans Drôme Rugby (VRDR). His departure follows that of fellow Argentine back Segundo Tuculet. He has left Valence Romans for Montauban.

Mensa made thirteen appearances for Valence Romans in the 2020-2021 Pro D2 season. His move to Mont de Marsan will see him playing alongside more Argentines. The club is presently home to four Argentine forwards. They are hooker José Luis González, prop Carlos Muzzio, second-rower, Leandro Cedaro, and N8 Santiago Montagner. González and Montagner have played with Mensa previously.

The 25-year-old Mensa joined Valence Romans for the 2021-2022 Pro D2 season. He was signed on for longer but will depart following the club’s relegation to France’s third division. Mensa joined Valence Romans from Argentina in what was his first foreign-based opportunity as a professional rugby player. He previously played in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) for Los Ceibos in 2020. He played in the team’s two league matches against the Olímpia Lions and Selknam.

He was captain of Los Ceibos, a choice which followed his involvement with Argentina’s national side. Mensa was selected for RWC 2019 by Mario Ledesma. He was a a replacement in the match against England where he earned his second test cap. His debut for Argentina was the final match before the tournament where he scored a disallowed try against South Africa.

Mensa’s name is on Argentina’s roster for 2021 international duty. He is one of two Pumas centers who featured in this season’s Pro D2. The other is Jerónimo de la Fuente whose club, Perpignan, will compete in the Semi Finals this coming weekend. The club is well-placed to win and to go on to secure promotion to the Top 14.
