Australia launch RWC 2027 bid

Australia’s bid for RWC 2027 is official. With the slogan Game On Rugby Australia have launched their bid to host the tournament. It would be the third RWC held in Australia after RWC 1987 and RWC 2003. The former was co-hosted with New Zealand while Australia exclusively hosted the 2003 tournament.

Australia’s bid projects 200,000 visitors from abroad. This would correspond to $2.5 billion entering the Australian economy. Matches would be spread around the country. The 2003 tournament featured 11 venues in 10 cities. Sydney hosted matches at two stadiums in addition to the nearby Gosford and Wollongong.

The Australia 2027 bid will include up to 10 venues. The bid states that matches will be played over seven weeks at between eight and ten venues. In other words, there will be fewer venues than in 2003.

The bid also provides insight into the tournament itself. The bid is for continuity not change. Australia 2027 is a bid for 48 matches featuring 20 competitors. This matches the format for France 2023 as well as for RWC 2003.

World Rugby will announce the successful host candidate in May 2022. Australia is presently the only finalized entrant. Russia intends on bidding as well as for 2031. The U.S. may bid for RWC 2031 and a 2031 bid from England is intended.
