Brazil pull out of Olympic Repechage to focus on RWC 2023 Qualifiers

Brazil Rugby, the Confederação Brasileira de Rugby (CBRu) has confirmed that Brazil’s men’s team has pulled-out of the upcoming qualification tournament for the Tokyo Olympics. Brazil was to compete at the Repechage competition on June 19-20 in Monaco.

The decision to pull-out is due to the tournament dates. The competition in Monaco is considered to be one week before Brazil faces Paraguay in the RWC 2023 qualifiers. In other words, priority has been given to the test side.

Brazil’s players are coming off a full season of the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). Os Cobras won three of their ten matches. They defeated Colombian side Los Cafeteros Pro in both of their meetings and completed a notable upset over Chilean side Selknam.

The same players from Brazil’s SLAR team, minus the six Argentine names, will form the test side for the RWC 2023 qualifiers. Brazil will compete against Paraguay in Round One. The winning side will advance to Round Two to face Uruguay and the winner of Chile vs Colombia.

Brazil has never qualified for a Rugby World Cup. The Sevens team competed as the host country of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
