The USA will play two Tier 1 nations during the upcoming July window. Head coach Gary Gold has confirmed on The American Rugby Show that the Eagles will face England at Twickenham on July 3, with a date against Ireland at Aviva Stadium the following weekend. World Rugby approval came on Friday.
With the possibility of playing the British & Irish Lions already ruled out, a proposed match against South Africa has also failed to come to fruition. England were due to tour North American this summer but will now play those games at home, while Ireland were recently forced to cancel their plans to tour Fiji.
The two tests will be the first played by the Eagles since Rugby World Cup 2019, with the 2020 program lost entirely to the COVID-19 pandemic. England were the USA’s first opponent at the tournament in Japan while their most recent match against Ireland was at Dublin in November 2018.
Gold will this week discuss support staff for the tour though they are likely to be short-term appointments with no Major League Rugby coaches available. The timing of the tests should see touring players available for the final week of the MLR season and subsequent playoffs.
