Late Penalty gives Cobras famous win over Selknam

A late penalty gave Os Cobras Brasil XV a one point victory over Selknam. The win will go down in history as a famous last minute 21-20 victory. The match was the final game of the SLAR regular season. Os Cobras will now return home to Brazil while Selknam turn their attention to Peñarol whom they face next Saturday in the Semi Finals.

Selknam opened the scoring early. Santiago Videla slotted a penalty to give the Chilean side a 3-0 lead. Thereafter it was a half wherein Os Cobras were in control. Moreover, the Brazilian side also played their best rugby of SLAR 2021.

Man of the match Moisés Duque opened Os Cobras’ account. His penalty leveled the scoring. His second effort was off target. He was cross with himself for missing the conversion attempt from 15 meters in from the tryline. It was for a try scored by flanker Matheus Claudio. The

Videla added a penalty to make it an 8-6 scoreline. The penalty would be Selknam’s second, and final, score of the opening half. The Matt Giteau of Brazil, Moisés Duque, took it upon itself to cancel out Videla’s penalty. Duqure landed a well-taken drop-goal to give Os Cobras an 11-6 advantage.

With the first half coming to a close, Os Cobras won a penalty. They kept the ball alive and found themselves deep in Selknam territory. Hooker Yan Rossetti finished off the move to score a push-over try following a rolling maul from a lineout. It gave Os Cobras an 18-6 lead at half-time.

Selknam recovered to be the better team in the second half. Hooker Tomás Dussaillant went over for the best try of the match. He touched down in the right corner to finish off a well-contructed team effort. Videla landed the conversion from a difficult angle.

The try changed the nature of the contest. Selkjnam were now on the front foot and Os Cobras’ forwards were visibly tired. Selknam struck again, again doing so through a hooker. Crossing was replacement Augusto Bohme. Another replacement, Patricio Baronio converted to give Selknam a two point lead with the clock ticking down.

Os Cobras kicked deep from the restart. Pressure saw them rewarded with a penalty going the way of Os Cobras. Duque slotted a penalty in the final minute to secure the third win of the campaign for Os Cobras Brasil XV.
