The LA Giltinis have announced the signing of two Fijian backs for the remainder of the 2021 Major League Rugby season. Jonetani Vasurakuta and Serupepeli Vularika are the latest players to join the star-studded side, arriving after the recent trades of Mika Kruse to Utah and Nick Boyer to Houston.
Vasurakuta had previously signed with the Dallas Jackals but when the Texan side pulled out of the 2021 season in January he was left without a club. Like Kruse his preferred position is outside center though the 21-year-old can also play on the wing. Though Vasurakuta is ineligible for the USA he will not be considered an import for the 2021 season under the dispersal agreement.
This is the first overseas professional contract for Vularika, who turns 31 at the end of this month. He has played two seasons with the Fijian Drua in Australia’s National Rugby Championship. Primarily a scrumhalf, Vularika is also a capable flyhalf or center who was long-listed for Fiji’s World Cup squad. To date he has played for his country on 12 occasions including 11 tests.
