Unbeaten Jaguares XV hammer Selknam

Los Jaguares hammered Selknam this evening to retain their unbeaten record. The Argentine side were 68-8 winners over the Chileans in a round eight fixture of the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). The result takes Los Jaguares XV to an 8-0 season record. Both Los Jaguares XV and Selknam have already qualified for the Semi Finals.

Selknam looked strong early. The Chileans opened the scoring with a penalty. Patricio Boronio’s strike was, however, the only poins from a kick for Selknam all match. Los Jaguares XV responded to the penalty with a try; Agustín Segura touched down shortly following the restart.

The Chileans looked to respond to the try by scoring one of their own. When host on attack the Chileans made the fatal mistake of passing wide only for Sebastián Cancelliere to latch on to it and run 80 meters to score an intercept try. It was the straw that broke the camels back; Los Jaguares XV were in control from there on in.

The Argentine side went into half time with the bonus point secured. Selknam were in no position to compete for a bonus point of their own. Instead, tries continued to flow with Cancelliere setting a SLAR record. He out did his own record of four tries from round seven against Los Cafeteros Pro to score five against Selknam.

Los Jaguares XV scored ten tries in total; Cancelliere’s five were half of them. Tomás Albornoz converted 8/9 and Martín Elías landed his one attempt. With time running out Selknam found their way over for a try. Regular captain Ignacio Silva came on as a replacement to score. The unconverted try ended the scoring for the match.

The teams now turn their attention to round nine. Selknam will face Peñarol in a must-win match to have the greatest chance of avoiding Los Jaguares XV in the Semi Finals.  Los Jaguares XV face against the Olímpia Lions in round nine.
