Canadian age-grade international Tyler Duguid has been named on the bench for Montpellier’s European Challenge Cup Quarter Final against Benetton Treviso on Saturday. Should the 20-year-old Edmonton native take the field as expected it would be the first fully professional match of his young career.
Duguid signed a two-year academy deal with the Top 14 club in June and has been a standout for the Montpellier Espoirs this season. He has trained regularly with the senior side and now finds himself alongside names such as South Africa hooker Bismarck du Plessis and France flanker Yacouba Camara. The USA’s Titi Lamositele will start at tighthead prop.
National selectors will be observing keenly with the 275lbs (124kg) Duguid likely to feature in Canada’s test side at some point in 2021. He is one of a handful of top Canadian prospects currently in French academy programs. Will Percillier has already appeared in the Top 14 this season and is joined by Quentin James at Stade Français. Second or back row Logan Weidner is with Brive, and front rower Mehdi Porchat is at Pro D2 side Oyonnax.
