SLAR Preview – Jaguares XV vs Peñarol

Los Jaguares XV and Peñarol meet in round five of the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) on Sunday. The battle of the Rio de la Plata is also a top of the table battle; both teams are thus far undefeated in the 2021 season.

Los Jaguares XV have named a side featuring eight changes to face Peñarol. Patagonians Federico Wegrzyn and Juan Pablo Zeiss are the starting props. Both men toured Australia for the 2020 Tri Nations. Additional names to do so who will start tomorrow include back-rowers Francisco Gorrissen, Juan Martín González, and Joaquín Oviedo, scrum-half Felipe Ezcurra, and winger Sebastián Cancelliere.

Ezcurra captains the side again. He will reunite with Martín Elías in the halves. Outside Elías will be a new-look mid-field of Juan Pablo Castro, and Agustín Segura.

Peñarol have rotated for the match. It sees the same policy used by other teams when facing Los Jaguares XV. Peñarol have moved Tomás Inciarte from outside center to scrum-half and havee given Uruguayans opportunities in several positions.

In the forwards this sees Mateo Perillo and Ezequiel Ramos starting in the front-row and Eric do Santos in the second-row. In the backs Felipe Arcos Pérez, and Federico Favaro, return and Baltazar Amaya will play fullback. Regular captain Andrés Vilaseca leads the side from inside center.

Peñarol’s line-up contains eleven Uruguayans and four Argentines. The starting players from across the Rio de la Plata are tight head Facundo Pomponio, second-rower Nahuel Milan, N8 Conrado Roura, and fly half Martín Roger.

The match will be a first; never before have the teams met. Los Jaguares XV enter as the odds-on-favorites to win and to do so with a bonus point. Peñarol’s player management has seen the team weakened from the previous match. ARN projects a Jaguares XV win by 30 points.

Kickoff is set for 7:00pm local time, 8:00pm Buenos Aires and Montevideo, and 6:00pm Bogotá. Live broadcasts will be provided by ESPN in the competing countries.
