Warriors call for Christensen, Whippy wins appeal

The Utah Warriors have called up extended squad scrumhalf Danny Christensen on a month-long senior contract to fill in a pressing need on the roster. Michael Baska was injured in Saturday’s game against the Toronto Arrows leaving Fraser Hurst as the only specialist No9 on the Major League Rugby squad.

While Christensen is uncapped at the professional level, he is not new to the program having captained the Warriors Selects during the fall. The 31-year-old was also part of the extended squad during the 2020 campaign and appeared in a preseason scrimmage with the Toronto Arrows in Las Vegas.

A 2nd team Collegiate All-American in 2015 while playing for the Utah Utes, Christensen has also played for the Highland Rugby Club and more recently Park City Haggis. He follows previous Selects call-ups James Mocke, Mike Gieselman, Logan Tago, Joseph Mano, and Sione Tau’ataina to the senior squad.

Meanwhile the Warriors have confirmed a successful appeal for Josh Whippy. The winger was handed a red card late in Saturday’s game for a high tackle on Arrows captain Lucas Rumball. His suspension has been lifted and Whippy is now free to play against the Free Jacks this coming weekend.
