Jaguares XV survive early scare to hammer Olímpia Lions

Los Jaguares XV survived an early scare this evening. In their round five match of the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR), the Argentine side pulled-off a 77-13 victory. Yet, as impressive as the final scoreline was it took 30 minutes before Jaguares XV scored points and the Olímpia Lions held a 10-0 lead.

The Olímpia Lions had an excellent opening 35 minutes. Up until that point the Paraguayan side held their own. Their strong start saw tight head Enrique Quinteros barging over in the 11th minute. Máximo Ledesma converted the try and added a penalty four minutes later.

Los Jaguares XV were not only behind but they also found themselves a man down. Flanker Lautaro Bavaro was yellow carded at the start of the second quarter. His return coincided with the Olímpia Lions losing Juan González for 10 minutes.

The one man advantage saw Los Jaguares opening their scoring account. Martín Cancelliere ran in the first of what would be three tries for the match. Fullback Juan Bautista Daireaux quickly followed to give Los Jaguares XV the lead with a flick of the fingers.

Both tries were converted by Tomás Albornoz. The fly half also converted a try to Bavaro in the final minute of the half. It was followed by a penalty from Ledesma. The act was the final score for the Paraguayans side. It saw Los Jaguares XV leading 21-13.

Albornoz continued to kick goals, all of which were from tries. He finished the match with 32 points. He touched down for two second half tries.

Los Jaguares were in total control as they ran in tries to hammer the Olímpia Lions’ backline defense. Many holes opened up following the red card to replacement Ignacio Gandini. Los Jaguares XV also took off many big players to field mobile ones. This assisted in the free-flowing rugby with the scoresheet seeing 56 points to the Argentine side in the second half.

The win sees Los Jaguares XV moving one more point above Peñarol. Los Jagaures XV have 20 points and Peñarol 18. The teams meet next round which will be on Sunday. The Olímpia Lions will take-on Los Cafeteros Pro.
