Georgia beat Romania to close in on qualifying for RWC 2023

Georgia move towards securing their place at Rugby World Cup 2023. In today’s RWC 2023 qualifier, the Lelos were 28-17 winners over Romania. The outcome gives Georgia a 4-0 record in the Rugby Europe Championship. Romania are in second position with a 2-2 record.

Today’s match was the second of two this weekend. In game one Portugal completed a comeback to overcome Spain. The 43-28 result moves Portugal above Russia to now occupy third spot. Spain are fifth with a 0-3 record; remarkable, considering Los Leones were in control against both Portugal and Romania.

The sixth, and remaining, team will be one of Belgium or the Netherlands. Georgia’s next match will be against this qualifier. A win is virtually assured. This would take Georgia beyond 20 competition points. At present Georgia have 20 and Romania 9.

The winner of the Rugby Europe Championship will qualify for RWC 2023 as Europe 1. This team will compete in Pool C of RWC 2023. The pool contains Wales, Australia, Fiji, Europe 1, and the Final Qualifier Winner.
