Argentine winger Sebastián Cancelliere to play Pro 14 in Scotland

Sebastián Cancelliere will join the Glasgow Warriors to play in the Pro 14. The Argentine winger will move to Scotland for the 2021-2022 season. The move will be his third professional club. He played Super Rugby for Los Jaguares in 2018-2020 and is currently playing in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) for Los Jaguares XV. He scored two tries on Sunday against Los Cafeteros Pro.

Cancelliere is one of two Argentine recruits for the new season. He and Domingo Miotti will both make the move to Scotland. Miotti is presently with the Western Force in Super Rugby AU. The Glasgow Warriors is also home to another former Jaguar, tight head prop Enrique Pieretto.

Additional Argentine players to have played for the Glasgow Warriors are Francisco Leonelli, Bernardo Stortoni, José Maria Nuñez Piossek, Federico Martín Aramburu, Germán Araoz, and Gabriel Ascarate.

The Pro 14 will be a 16-team competition next season. Eight Argentine players are playing in the current season. Pieretto is the one player in Scotland. He is joined by Gonzalo Bertranou (Dragons) in the UK. The additional players all play for Italian sides. Eduardo Bello plays for Zebre while Tomás Baravalle, Juan Ignacio Brex, Thomas Gallo, Iván Nemer, and Joaquín Riera play for Benetton Treviso. Brex is capped by Italy.

Cancelliere has 7 test caps, the first was against England in 2017. His most recent cap was against South Africa in 2019. He narrowly missed out on selection for RWC 2019. In 2020 he was on Los Pumas’ roster for the Tri Nations.

The 27-year-old was born in San José, California to Argentine parents. His mother was pregnant with him when arriving in the USA. His father moved there for work in 1993. In 1994, before Cancelliere was a year old, his parents returned to Argentina. He was raised in Buenos Aires where he learned his rugby. He is a product of Hindú Club.
