Nate Ebner has made a surprise return to the USA Eagles squad ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. The professional football player has been cleared by the New York Giants to compete in rugby before returning to the NFL for the 2021-22 season.
Ebner last played competitive rugby at the 2016 Rio Olympics, playing two games during the tournament. During that time since the 32-year-old added his second and third Super Bowl titles with the New England Patriots before signing with the Giants in 2020.
The announcement comes five years to the day since Ebner declared himself available for the Eagles in 2016. It’s a welcome boost to the team who are reeling from a serious leg injury suffered by star player Perry Baker. He will be competing against the likes of newcomers Christian Dyer and Jake Lachina to break into the squad.
Previously an age-grade international for the USA up to u20 level, Ebner has remained involved with the rugby community. He is a minority of the New England Free Jacks of Major League Rugby along with former Patriots teammate Patrick Chung.
