World Rugby officially cancels 2021 u20 Trophy tourney

For a second straight year, the World Rugby u20 Trophy has been cancelled. World Rugby confirmed the decision on Friday. It was an expected announcement following the earlier cancellation of the top tier World Rugby u20 Championship.

A media release included this statement:

“The dynamic nature of the environment combined with travel restrictions do not provide the right conditions to host a safe and successful tournament as initially planned for September. The decision was made in consultation with partners and unions involved in the junior competition.”

Americas representatives in the tournament in recent years include Brazil, Canada, Uruguay, and the USA. They were also due to compete in the inaugural u20 Americas Rugby Championship in 2020, though it too was cancelled.

It’s not clear at this stage if a u20 ARC this year will be possible though World Rugby says that regional solutions are being discussed.
