Utah signs Scholz nominee James Mocke on short-term deal

The Utah Warriors have signed South African lock James Mocke on a short term contract for the first month of the 2021 Major League Rugby season. He had already been training with the squad as part of the development squad and played for the Warriors selects during the fall exhibition series.

Mocke was part of the Golden Lions age-grade program before emigrating to Utah where he finished high school. The 25-year-old was a standout performer for Brigham Young University and was nominated for the Rudy Scholz award in 2020 as one of the nation’s top collegiate rugby players.

It’s not immediately clear if the length of the contract is related to injury or a potential visa delay. Two of Utah’s off-season signings were locks based overseas – fellow South African Aston Fortuin and Ireland u20 cap Matthew Dalton. Other second rows on the roster include Matt Jensen, Puna Vuli, and Saia Uhila.
