Major League Rugby partners with American Airlines

Major League Rugby has announced a multi-year agreement with American Airlines to become the official travel partner of the professional league as it enters its fourth year. Specifics of the deal were not disclosed in an official release, with the league simply stating that the partnership would provide ‘a number of benefits’ to teams and players.

A statement from Esther Maldonado, Managing Director of Central Division Sales, suggests that MLR’s travel costs will be significantly impacted by the agreement.

“Our new partnership with Major League Rugby is an opportunity to make travel costs more affordable and flexible for organizations, providing them a safe and comfortable travel experience, and a chance for American to engage with Major League Rugby’s fans across North America.”

American Airlines is the world’s largest airline in terms of fleet size and operates thousands of flights daily to over 350 destinations worldwide. Though founded in Chicago, its headquarters are currently located in Fort Worth, Texas. MLR Commissioner George Killebrew is based in neighboring Dallas.

This is the first league-wide airline partner for Major League Rugby but not the first among its teams. The New England Free Jacks announced last month that they have agreed a partnership with Delta Airlines who will also sponsor pitchside ‘hospitality suites’ at Union Point Stadium.
