Old Glory DC have confirmed three more names for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. Versatile front rower Dante Lopresti returns for a second MLR campaign while there are two newcomers in tighthead prop Jack Carroll and flyhalf Owen Sheehy. All three played high school rugby at Gonzaga College.
Lopresti joined the club along with brother Guy ahead of the 2019 spring exhibition schedule. He started three of the four games at tighthead prop, but switched to hooker for DC’s inaugural MLR season. The 23-year-old would play four games in 2020 including starts against Seattle and Houston.
It’s a return to rugby for Carroll. A High School All-American, he opted to play collegiate football as an offensive lineman for the UNH Wildcats. Now 24 years old and some 30 pounds lighter, Carroll effectively takes the roster spot of the departed Gordon Fullerton.
The Sheehy name is well known to Old Glory fans. Owen is one of three rugby-playing sons of team co-owner Paul Sheehy, a former USA international. The 21-year-old is an accomplished player in his own right, a High School All-American who also earned honorable mention for Collegiate All-American Sevens honors as a freshmen at the University of Wisconsin.
Old Glory are set to unveil much of their squad for the upcoming season in a live-streamed season preview event on Friday evening. The event begins at 6:30pm local time and will feature a full practice and intra-squad session along with player and coach interviews.
