RWC 2023: minimum of five rest days between matches

RWC 2023 will have a minimum of five rest days between matches. The change comes are repeated RWCs saw teams playing twice with three rest days. The change is to apply to all teams. The new rule will see increased rest periods to see a more level pool schedule for all 20 participants at France 2003.

RWC 2019 saw a range of competitors playing with limited rest between matches. Russia their first and second matches before Uruguay had played their first match. Organizers handed Uruguay had three rest days between facing Fiji and Georgia. The USA had the same low rest days between facing Argentina and Tonga.

For RWC 2023 no team will have a rest period of less than five days. To make this possible the pool phase for RWC 2023 will involve an additional week. This sees the tournament beginning on September 08 and finishing with the RWC 2023 final on October 28.

An additional change sees increased player rosters. They rise by two from 31 to 33 players. Ten years ago rosters contained 30 players. They increase to 31 for RWC 20215.

The match schedule for RWC 2023 is to be and announced this coming Friday. For the time being Argentina is the only Americas competitor that will compete in the tournament. Two additional teams from the Americas will qualify and there is an opportunity for a third via global repechage. The Americas qualifiers are to begin in June in Montevideo.
