Hencus van Wyk will not be joining the San Diego Legion after all, at least not yet. The South African tighthead prop will instead stay in Japan, signing with the NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes of the Top League. He had previously played for Sanix Blues and in Super Rugby with the Sunwolves.
It’s the second such move experienced by San Diego in recent days. Earlier this month second row Joshua Furno signed with French club Biarritz, though he may yet return to the Legion at the completion of the Pro D2 season. The Pro D2 playoffs wrap up mid-June with the Top League ending May 23.
San Diego have already announced the signing of Irish prop Cronan Gleeson from Rugby ATL who should be expected to fill the No3 shirt, with returning American prospect Aaron Mitchell another option. Nathan Sylvia is one of three looseheads but began his MLR career as a tighthead.
