San Diego set to play home games at Cashman Field

The San Diego Legion appear set to call Cashman Field home for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. While the team has not yet confirmed a venue since announcing their Las Vegas move, several MLR schedule and ticket pages now list the downtown site as the match location.

Located just north of the Las Vegas Strip, Cashman Field was originally a baseball stadium but has now been repurposed into a soccer venue. The infield dirt has been permanently replaced by a grass surface while the unusual square design has translated into a better viewing experience than most converted baseball venues. It is currently the home of the Las Vegas Lights who play in the USL Championship.

Sam Boyd Stadium was the venue used for MLR Vegas Weekend in 2020, but its aging turf surface and Whitney location are unpopular. Las Vegas Ballpark in Summerlin was originally meant to host the weekend. Cashman Field has a capacity of 9,300 though it’s unknown how many will be permitted under the current COVID-19 regulations.
