Iosefo to lead Men’s Eagles in Madrid

Martin Iosefo will captain the Men’s Eagles when they compete at the Madrid Sevens later this month. Iosefo was the dominant player in the Golden Eagles intra-squad series held in December and leads the side in the absence of regular skipper Madison Hughes.

The tournament has been arranged as part of Olympic preparations with the World Sevens Series still on hiatus due to COVID-19. It will take place over two weekends, the first February 20-21 and the second February 27-28. Individual rosters of 12 will be selected from the traveling group of 16 for each weekend.

There are two uncapped players named. Cal Golden Bears standout Christian Dyer and former Army West Point captain Jake Lachina are handed opportunities after impressing at the Chula Vista Camp.

Hughes is one of several capped Eagles who will not make the trip. Most notable are Danny Barrett, Stephen Tomasin, Carlin Isles, and long-term injury casualty Folau Niua.

The Eagles will compete against Portugal, Spain, Kenya, Argentina, and France. Streaming details are to be confirmed ahead of the opening weekend.
