Newcastle Falcons lose Santiago Grondona to season ending injury

Santiago Grondona is out for the season. The Argentine flanker arrived at the Newcastle Falcons after the 2020 Tri Nations. He is now back in Argentina recovering from surgery before making his debut.

Grondona was injured in training at Newcastle, suffering a torn knee ligament. The nature of the injury saw him fly him to Buenos Aires. UAR doctor Guillermo Botto oversaw the operation. He will not play again for six months.

The injury is a blow to not only Newcastle but also to Los Pumas. Grondona debuted for Argentina in the Tri Nations. His first cap was as a replacement in the historic win over New Zealand in Sydney. He went on to play in all four of Argentina’s matches, including starting in the second draw against Australia.

Los Pumas are scheduled to play host to Wales and Georgia in July. The three mid-year internationals are to be the first in Argentina since RWC 2019. Grondona faces a race against time to be considered for the matches.
